Historic Victories of National People's Action

  • Spearheaded efforts to pass the Community Reinvestment Act and the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act in the 1970s – often referred to as the most important economic justice public policy for neighborhoods.

  • Efforts on CRA have resulted in over $4.7 trillion dollars being invested in low and moderate income communities across the United States. NPA has been involved in more CRA agreements than any other organization.

  • Led a successful and productive partnership with Fannie Mae to develop mortgage products to meet the home mortgage needs of underserved neighborhoods. To date, this 8-city partnership has resulted in $4 billion in loans to families.

  • Entered a historic agreement with mortgage servicing giant, Fairbanks Capital Corporation (now Select Portfolio Servicing) regarding predatory servicing practices. This agreement results in families saving their homes from foreclosures, hundreds of thousands of dollars being refunded to homeowners and new protections for low and moderate income homeowners.

  • Signed a groundbreaking, national agreement with Citifinancial, a Citigroup affiliate, in May of 2003. This partnership between NPA and Citifinancial outlines new Citifinancial policies and commitments against predatory lending and focuses on rebuilding America’s debt-burdened working class communities.

  • Signed a precedent-setting, three-year agreement with Ocwen Financial Corporation designed to accomplish the shared goals of promoting stable homeownership, meeting the mortgage servicing needs of neighborhoods and setting a standard for sub prime servicing practices.

  • NPA coordinated the Illinois Coalition Against Predatory Home Loans that led to the passage of anti-predatory lending legislation signed by Gov. Blagojevich in August, 2003. This coalition meets quarterly with the Office of Banks and Real Estate (OBRE). Since it was formed in 1999, the coalition led efforts to pass the Illinois Anti-Predatory Lending Regulations and the City of Chicago Anti-Predatory Lending Law (first municipal anti-predatory lending law in the country).

  • Worked with HUD officials to create a system-wide monitoring program for its lending in low/moderate income and minority communities. Our work to improve HUD policies benefits over 1 million families annually with FHA loans.
