NPA at the US Social Forum National People's Action staff and affiliates led workshops and actions at the 2010 U.S. Social Forum that was held in Detroit from June 22-26th. New York City AIDS Housing Network/VOCAL, Good Old Lower East Side, and Northwest Bronx Community & Clergy Coalition brought community leaders from New York City to the Social Forum to share stories from their campaigns, learn about other organizations and issues, and act in solidarity with the people of Detroit who face disinvestment on a massive scale. NPA Organizing Director James Mumm joined the AFL-CIO and Jobs With Justice to facilitate two packed workshops -- "Good Jobs for All: Winning Full and Fair Employment and a New Economy" and "The Fight for Jobs and Economic Recovery." Coming off of the "Big Ideas for a New Economy" session at the 2010 NPA Conference in May, NPA had a clear message to share with the U.S. Social Forum -- the fight for jobs is a fight to hold big corporations accountable and build a new economy that works for everyone. Leaders and staff from NPA’s Housing Justice Movement Campaign also co-hosted a workshop with Right to the City. The workshop was a combined interactive presentation around the “racialization” and disinvestment of public housing, and what it will take to strengthen and expand the nation’s public housing system. | |
